Year 5

The Year Learning Grows Up

A confident, faith-rooted step into Upper Key Stage 2

Designed for families who want depth, clarity, and courage

Year 5 is not just another year.

It is the year children begin to notice contradictions, ask harder questions, and think more independently. Writing becomes more complex. Maths demands real reasoning. History stretches wider. Science starts to touch ideas they will meet again and again as they grow. For many home-educated children, this is also the year they first encounter ideas that sit outside the biblical framework they know. That makes Year 5 a turning point. Handled poorly, it creates confusion. Handled carefully, it builds confidence, discernment, and depth. This curriculum is designed for the second outcome.

Why Year 5 Is the Shift Year

Up to now, your child has learned within a clear biblical framework. History has included both biblical and non-biblical civilisations. Science has focused on observation, patterns, and God’s ordered world. Big worldview questions have not needed to be confronted head-on. Year 5 changes that.

This is the year children are ready to:

• compare ideas rather than just receive them

• handle more than one explanation

• ask why something does or does not align

• begin forming reasoned opinions

Avoiding these conversations does not protect children.

Guiding them through them does.

And home education gives you the freedom to do that well.

Our Approach in Year 5

This curriculum does not pretend all views are the same. We teach the biblical account of Creation clearly and confidently, rooted in Scripture. At the same time, we introduce the Big Bang and evolutionary theories as they are commonly presented, including the evidence used to support them. These perspectives are taught side by side, not blended and not confused.

Children learn:

• what each view claims

• how evidence is interpreted

• where the differences are

• why those differences matter

Faith is not weakened by understanding other ideas. It is strengthened when children can see clearly. This is one of the greatest advantages of home education.

A Fully Connected, Six-Subject Curriculum

Nothing in Year 5 is taught in isolation.

Subjects support each other so learning makes sense and knowledge sticks.

English and Writing

Children move into sustained, mature writing:

• multi-paragraph pieces

• planning, drafting, editing

• formal and informal tone

• grammar used purposefully

• summarising and note-taking

• deeper reading comprehension

Writing grows out of real content from history, science, and geography, not artificial prompts.

Maths

Maths in Year 5 is carefully structured and mastery-led:

• long multiplication and short division

• fractions, decimals, and percentages

• reasoning and explanation

• geometry and measurement

• multi-step problem solving

Clear teaching notes break concepts down step by step so confidence grows alongside challenge.

Science

Science deepens understanding of the natural world through:

• materials and their properties

• forces

• Earth and space

• life cycles

• scientific recording and explanation

Hands-on investigation remains central, while discussion and explanation become more important.

History

History continues chronologically, giving children a clear sense of sequence, cause, and consequence.

Children explore:

• ancient civilisations moving into early empires

• key biblical events alongside world history

• major cultures, inventions, and movements

• how history fits into a wider narrative

The growing timeline continues, helping children see the “big picture” of history with clarity.

Geography

Geography builds understanding of place, people, and patterns:

• world regions and cultures

• climate zones and biomes

• trade, economy, and resources

• human and physical geography

• stewardship of creation

Geography connects naturally with history and science, reinforcing understanding rather than adding load.

Bible

Bible study deepens rather than simplifies:

• careful reading of Scripture

• understanding context and narrative

• strengthening confidence in biblical truth

• learning to recognise when ideas align or conflict

This is faith with roots.

The Discover Build Lead Flow in Year 5

Year 5 follows the same familiar flow your child already knows.

Discover

Children explore ideas through reading, stories, discussion, and observation.

Build

Skills are strengthened carefully. Gaps are addressed early. Understanding is revisited until it is secure.

Lead

Children are encouraged to explain, compare, evaluate, and express their thinking with growing independence.

Nothing is rushed.

Nothing is assumed.

Mastery matters more than speed.

Tools That Support Independence Without Removing Support

Year 5 introduces tools designed to grow independence while keeping guidance clear.

The Year 5 Information Book

A structured reference with subject knowledge, vocabulary, diagrams, maps, and revision notes across all subjects.

The Year 5 Workbook

A guided space for applying learning through writing, maths, diagrams, research, timelines, and projects.

Library reading continues to play a key role, especially as research skills develop, but core content is always accessible at home.

Why This Curriculum Works

Because it respects the reality of nine and ten year olds.

They are capable of deep thinking.

They still need structure.

They can handle complexity when guided.

They lose confidence when rushed.

This curriculum is shaped by real classroom experience, real home education, and real children.

It is rigorous without being harsh.

Faith-rooted without being fragile.

Challenging without being overwhelming.

Example Image with Text

As the well known saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Add image with text sections to your sales page to visually strengthen the message your page is trying to convey. For example, you might want to introduce yourself with a profile image, showcase a smiling student or highlight something else with an image.
